Forget presents – buy a house whilst Stamp Duty is still on its holidays

During this second lockdown whilst we’re mostly all working from home Scrivener Tibbatts is still hard at work for you. This lockdown is different from the first one in that the government has confirmed that the housing market will remain open throughout the lockdown and people will still be allowed to move house.

The Housing Secretary, the Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP has confirmed: “The housing market will remain open throughout this period. Everyone should continue to play their part in reducing the spread of the virus by following the current guidance.”

“There’s a good reason for this,” explains Zah Azeem, Partner at Wimbledon-based Chartered Surveyors Scrivener Tibbatts. “The housing market is one of the main engines of the UK economy. And there’s also a good reason for not postponing your decision to buy or sell a property.

“The Stamp Duty holiday is due to end on 31st March 2021. This means in order to benefit from the Stamp Duty holiday, house purchases must complete before 31st March 2021. From April 2021 onwards the stamp duty rates and thresholds are due to revert back to previous levels.”

We will continue to offer valuations and support our clients and customers in all of their transactions. We will also continue to follow our strict Covid-19 protocols, which include enhanced use of PPE, restrictions on viewings and facilitating and encouraging more video viewings, amongst other things.
